Brick Breaker

Brick Breaker is a paddle-and-ball game: bounce a ball off the paddle at the bottom of the field and break the wall of bricks above it without letting the ball past you. Where the ball lands on the paddle sets its angle — straight up from the centre, out to 60 degrees at the ends. Clear every brick that can break to finish a wall. There are 12 walls here, three lives and six power-ups.

New game starts at level 1 of 12 with three lives. The paddle follows the mouse, a dragging finger, or the arrow keys (A and D work too), and Space, a click or a tap launches the ball. Where the ball lands on the paddle sets its angle. P or Esc pauses, and the board pauses itself when you switch tabs or scroll it out of view — a paused game is saved.

A game is recorded when it ends. It counts as a win when all 12 walls are cleared; the best score is kept whether you got that far or not.

The six capsules

  • Wide paddle — the paddle grows by half for 20 seconds.
  • Multi-ball — two more balls split off one in play.
  • Slow ball — every ball drops to 70% speed for 12 seconds.
  • Catch — the paddle holds the ball until you launch it for 20 seconds.
  • Laser — the paddle fires a bolt from each end for 12 seconds.
  • Extra life — one more life.

How do you play Brick Breaker?

Each wall opens with a title card, and the ball waits on the paddle until you launch it — Space, a click on the field, or a tap. From then on the ball never stops: it bounces off the rails at the sides and top, off every brick it meets, and off the paddle, which is the one thing you control. Move it with the mouse, by dragging a finger along the field, or with the Left and Right arrow keys (A and D work too).

The bottom of the field is open. A ball that drops past the paddle is gone, and when the last ball in play goes you lose a life and the next one is served on the paddle. You start with three lives; an Extra life capsule adds one, up to 6. Break every brick that can break and the wall is cleared — metal bricks never break, and never have to. Clear the twelfth wall to win.

How does the paddle aim the ball?

By where the ball lands on it, and nothing else. The centre of the paddle sends the ball straight up; the further out it lands, the wider it goes, evenly, to 60 degrees from straight up at either end. The direction the ball came in from plays no part, which is what makes aiming something you can learn: catch the ball in the same place and it leaves on the same line every time.

Where the ball lands, and where it goes
Landing pointAngle from straight up
The centre0° — straight back up
A quarter of the way out15°
Halfway out30°
Three quarters out45°
The very end60°

So a ball never leaves the paddle flatter than 30 degrees above horizontal, and no bounce anywhere on the field leaves it flatter than 20 degrees — without that floor, a ball that clips the corner of a brick can come away nearly level and spend half a minute ticking between the side rails.

What do the different bricks do?

Five kinds of brick
BrickHits to breakPointsWhat else
Normal150Coloured in the wall's own palette
Strong2100Cracks on the first hit; a pip for each hit left
Tough3150Framed heavier, cracks twice
MetalNever0The ball bounces off; clearing a wall never needs it
Explosive180Clears the eight bricks around it, metal excepted

A hit that cracks a strong or tough brick without breaking it is worth 10. An explosive brick destroys every brick in the eight cells around it outright, however many hits they had left, and a charge caught in the blast goes off in turn — so a line of them is a fuse. Every brick a blast takes counts towards your combo exactly as if the ball had broken it.

What do the six power-ups do?

About one breakable brick in seven — 14% of each wall, never fewer than 4 capsules or more than 12 — hides a capsule, which drops when that brick breaks. Catch it on the paddle for its effect and 100 points. Which bricks carry which capsule is fixed by the game number when the wall is built, so replaying a game hides the same capsules in the same places. An Extra life appears at most once per wall.

The capsules
CapsulePower-upWhat it doesLasts
WWide paddleThe paddle grows by half20 seconds
MMulti-ballTwo more balls split off one in play, 25 degrees either sideUntil they are lost

CCatchThe paddle holds the ball until you launch it, or 3 seconds20 seconds
LLaserA bolt from each end of the paddle every 0.4 seconds12 seconds
+Extra lifeOne more life, up to 6Kept

Catching a capsule that is already running restarts its clock rather than stacking it, and different power-ups run together. Losing a life or clearing a wall ends every one of them. There are never more than 8 balls in play at once.

How is the score worked out?

Every brick has a value — 50, 80, 100 or 150 — and the combo multiplies it. The first brick a ball breaks after leaving the paddle scores once, the second twice, the third three times, and so on up to ×8. Touch the paddle and the count starts again. Five bricks in a row off one bounce are worth 50 + 100 + 150 + 200 + 250 = 750 instead of 250, which is why getting the ball behind the wall is worth so much: up there it can break a dozen bricks before it comes back down.

Clearing a wall pays 1,000 points times its number — 1,000 for the first, 12,000 for the last, 78,000 for all twelve. Bricks broken by the laser score at ×1, because no ball broke them. The best score is kept in your browser, win or lose, and never leaves your device.

Each wall has its own colour scheme on the same felt, and each one is checked by the test suite for fairness: nothing but metal is unbreakable, and every breakable brick can be reached — a flood fill from the open field, through empty cells and breakable bricks but never through metal or through a gap where two bricks only meet at a corner, has to touch every one. A machine player then clears all twelve walls to prove it in play.

The ball gets faster from wall to wall and never within one. On level 1 it travels 320 units a second across a field 480 wide; each level adds 4.5%, so by level 12 it moves at about 519 — 62% faster.

Why does the ball never pass through a brick?

Because every collision is swept. The simulation runs on a fixed 240 steps a second, whatever your screen's frame rate, and in each step the ball is tested along its whole path, not just where it ends up: the earliest thing it would touch — a rail, the paddle, the face or the rounded corner of a brick — is resolved first, and the rest of the step continues from there. That is why a ball that clips the corner of a brick glances off at an angle instead of bouncing as if it hit flat, and why it never slips between two bricks.

The test suite fires balls in thousands of random directions at twenty times the fastest speed the game ever uses and checks that not one of them ends up inside a brick or outside the field. And because a field of rails and metal can hold a path that repeats forever, a ball that goes 10 seconds without touching the paddle or a breakable brick has its next bounce turned by a few degrees. It only ever acts on a ball that has stopped making progress, so a ball busy breaking bricks behind the wall is never touched. For a different kind of physics, try Pinball; for another arcade game against the clock, Snake.

How do you get better at brick breaker?

  • Get behind the wallOpen one column and put the ball through it. Above the bricks it bounces between the top rail and the back of the wall, breaking brick after brick without coming down — and every one of those climbs the combo towards ×8.
  • Aim with the ends, not the middleThe centre of the paddle sends the ball straight back up the column it came down; the outer quarters send it across the wall at 45 to 60 degrees. Use the ends to reach the bricks the ball is not already hitting.
  • Fire charges where they chainAn explosive brick clears the eight cells around it, and a charge caught in the blast goes off too. On Chain Reaction one hit at either end of the V fires all eleven, which is most of the wall.
  • Use Catch for the hard shotsA caught ball waits on the paddle for up to three seconds, which is time to walk it under exactly the gap you want — the door of the Vault, the neck of the Hourglass — before you let it go.
  • Never trade a ball for a capsuleA capsule is worth 100 points and a power-up; the ball is worth a life. Move for a capsule only while the ball is on its way up, and let it fall if reaching it would leave the paddle out of place.

Brick Breaker questions people ask

Is this brick breaker game free?
Yes. It is free, with no sign-up, no download and no app to install. Open the page and the first wall is there; your best score and a paused game are kept in your own browser.
Does the ball get faster in brick breaker?
Level by level, never within a level. It starts at 320 units a second, each wall adds 4.5%, and on level 12 it is about 519 — 62% faster. The Slow ball capsule takes it down to 70% for 12 seconds.
Can the ball get stuck bouncing forever?
No. A ball that goes 10 seconds without touching the paddle or a breakable brick has its next bounce turned by a few degrees, which breaks any loop between the rails and the metal. No bounce ever leaves it flatter than 20 degrees either.
What happens when you lose the ball?
If it was the last ball in play you lose a life, every running power-up ends, and a new ball is served on the paddle for you to launch. You start with three lives and can hold up to six.
Can you play brick breaker on a phone?
Yes. Drag a finger along the field and the paddle follows it; tap to launch. While a ball is in play the field does not scroll the page under your finger, and the full screen button gives it the whole display.
Is my game saved if I leave the page?
Yes. The game pauses itself when you switch tabs or scroll the board out of view, and a paused game is saved, ball and all. Open the page again and it is waiting where you left it.

The rules in six lines

  1. 1Serve the ballEach wall starts with the ball on the paddle. Press Space, click the field or tap it to launch; the ball leaves at the angle its place on the paddle sets.
  2. 2Keep it off the floorMove the paddle under the ball with the mouse, a finger or the arrow keys. A ball that drops past the paddle is gone, and losing the last one in play costs a life.
  3. 3Aim with the paddleThe ball leaves straight up from the centre of the paddle and at up to 60 degrees either side from its ends, whatever direction it arrived from.
  4. 4Break every brick that can breakNormal bricks take one hit, strong bricks two and tough bricks three; an explosive brick clears the eight around it. Metal never breaks and never has to.
  5. 5Catch the capsulesSome bricks drop a capsule when they break. Catch it on the paddle for a wider paddle, extra balls, a slower ball, a sticky paddle, a laser or an extra life.
  6. 6Clear all twelve wallsA cleared wall pays 1,000 points times its number and the next one is a little faster. Clear the twelfth to win; run out of lives and the game is over.
