Mahjong Connect

Mahjong Connect is a tile-matching puzzle played on a rectangle of face-up mahjong tiles. Remove them two at a time: two identical tiles come off together when a line of no more than three straight segments — two turns at most — can join them through empty cells, and the empty border round the board counts as empty. Clear every tile to win. Every deal here can be cleared.

New game deals a fresh board at the size you last chose. Hint rings a pair that can be joined now, taken from a known way to clear the board whenever there is one, and is counted. Shuffle deals the tiles left into a layout that can still be cleared; there are three per game. The three-dot menu holds the board size and today’s shared game.

Each board size keeps its own record. A game you abandon, or one that runs out of moves with every shuffle spent, counts as a loss. Kept in this browser only.

How do you play Mahjong Connect?

The board starts full: every cell of a 10 × 6, 14 × 8 or 18 × 8 rectangle holds a tile, face up. Pick a tile, then its twin. If a line of at most three straight segments can run from one to the other through nothing but empty cells, both tiles come off. Lines run along rows and columns only — never diagonally — and may bend at most twice.

The ring of cells just outside the board is empty from the start, so a line may leave the board, travel along its edge and come back in. That is why tiles on the edge are the easiest to clear and the middle of a full board is the hardest. Clear every tile and the game is won.

Which connections are legal?

What a connecting line may look like
ShapeTurnsLegal?
A straight line, even between neighbours0Yes
An L, round one corner1Yes
A Z or a U, round two corners2Yes
Out into the border, along it and back in2Yes — the border counts as empty
Any route with three corners3No
Any route that crosses another tileAnyNo

Turns are what count, not distance: a line may cross the whole board in three segments, while twins that touch corner to corner cannot be joined through either of the two cells beside them until one of those cells is empty. And two tiles on the same outer edge can always be joined, however crowded the board — out into the border, along it and back in is exactly two turns.

Is every Mahjong Connect board solvable?

Every deal on this page is, because it is built by playing the game backwards. The generator starts from a full grid of blank tiles and lifts them off in pairs, each pair joinable at the moment it goes, until the grid is empty; then it prints a matching face on each lifted pair. The order it lifted them in is a winning line for the board it deals. It also prefers to lift tiles that do not touch, so twins sit side by side no more often than they would in a plain shuffle, and the opening moves are not handed to you.

A board that can be cleared is not a guaranteed win. Every face appears four times, and pairing the wrong two copies is the one choice that can turn a clearable board into one that cannot be cleared. The order you take pairs in never matters on its own, because taking tiles away only ever opens routes.

The test suite plays 100 boards of each size twice. Taking only the pair the Hint button shows cleared all 300 without a single shuffle. Taking any joinable pair at random cleared all 300 too, but ran out of moves and had to shuffle on 4 of the Small boards, 18 of the Medium and 21 of the Large — never more than once on any board.

What happens when no pair can be joined?

The board says so and offers a shuffle. A shuffle leaves every tile where it is but deals the faces again across the cells still occupied, built the same backwards way as the deal, so the new layout can always be cleared and always has at least one pair ready to take. You get three shuffles a game and may use them whenever you like; a shuffle taken because the board was stuck comes out of the same three.

Run out of moves with all three spent and the game is over — it counts as a loss in your statistics, the same as abandoning a board. Hints are unlimited but counted, and the count is shown beside the clock and on the win screen.

Which tiles are in a Mahjong Connect set?

Characters1–9The number over 萬
WindsEast, South, West, NorthE, S, W and N

That is 36 faces. The Large board deals all 36 four times — 144 tiles, the classic count — while the Medium board deals 28 of them and the Small board 15, chosen afresh for every game number. Unlike mahjong solitaire, where any flower pairs with any flower, a pair here must be two identical tiles, which is why there is one Flower face and one Season face, each dealt four times.

How is it different from mahjong solitaire?

Mahjong solitaire stacks its tiles in layers and frees a tile by uncovering it. Mahjong Connect lays every tile flat in a single layer and frees a pair by drawing a line between them. Nothing ever rests on anything else, so every tile is in view from the first move and the whole puzzle is in the routes — which makes it closer in spirit to Memory Match, with the cards face up and the geometry doing the hiding.

How do you get better at mahjong connect?

  • Pair the right copiesEvery face appears four times, and choosing which two copies go together is the only decision that can spoil a board that could be cleared. When three or four of a face are in view, pair the two that leave the others easiest to reach.
  • Take a whole face at once when you canIf all four copies of a face can be cleared as two pairs right now, take both pairs. That can never hurt: removing tiles only opens routes, and those four had to go sooner or later.
  • There is no rush for a pair that already joinsA pair that can be joined now will still be joinable after any other move, because the board only ever loses tiles. Open up the crowded middle first and leave the easy pairs for later.
  • Treat the edges as a reserveTwo tiles on the same outer edge can always be joined through the border, however full the board. They are the moves that will still be there when everything else is blocked.
  • Search outward from one tileA route can only leave a tile along its row or its column. Follow the open cells in those four directions: the tile's twin can be joined only if it can reach one of those cells with a line that turns once at most — or if it is a neighbour.

Mahjong Connect questions people ask

Can the connecting line go round the outside of the board?
Yes. The ring of cells just outside the board is always empty, so a line can leave the board, run along the edge and come back in, as long as the whole route still has no more than two turns.
Why won't two identical tiles that touch corner to corner match?
A line only runs along rows and columns. Tiles touching diagonally need a route through one of the two cells beside them, or a longer way round; if both of those cells hold tiles and nothing else fits in two turns, the pair cannot be joined yet.
How many shuffles do you get in Mahjong Connect?
Three per game. A shuffle keeps every tile in its place but deals the faces again, always into a layout that can be cleared. When no pair can be joined the board offers one, and that shuffle comes out of the same three.
Do hints cost anything?
They are unlimited and do not touch the clock, but each one is counted and the total is shown during the game and on the win screen. Followed from the first move, the hints always clear the board: the test suite does exactly that on 300 boards and clears every one.
Is Mahjong Connect the same as mahjong solitaire?
No. Both use mahjong tiles and both clear the board in pairs, but mahjong solitaire stacks the tiles in layers and frees a tile by uncovering it, while Mahjong Connect lays every tile flat and frees a pair by joining the two with a line.
What is today's Mahjong Connect game?
One Medium board a day, identical for every player, changing at midnight UTC. It is under Today's game in the three-dot menu, and on the daily challenge page with the other daily games.

The rules in six lines

  1. 1Deal a full boardEvery cell of the rectangle holds a face-up tile — 60, 112 or 144 of them — and every face appears exactly four times.
  2. 2Join two identical tilesTwo identical tiles come off together when a line of at most three straight segments — two turns at most — joins them through empty cells.
  3. 3Use the borderThe ring of cells just outside the board is always empty, so a line may leave the board, run along its edge and come back in.
  4. 4Never cross a tileA line runs along rows and columns only, never diagonally, and never through a cell that still holds a tile.
  5. 5Shuffle when stuckWhen no pair can be joined, a shuffle deals the faces left into a layout that can be cleared. There are three per game.
  6. 6Clear every tile to winThe game is won when the board is empty, and lost if no pair can be joined once all three shuffles are spent.
