Cosmic Command Pinball

Cosmic Command Pinball is a free space pinball game you can play online right now — no download, no sign-up, fullscreen in one tap, keyboard controls on a desktop and large invisible flipper zones on a phone. Three balls, one orbit, eight scoring devices, five missions and an eight-rung flight rating. Drop the three Hull Plating targets, shoot the Command Deck hole behind them, and the deck offers you a mission.

New game deals three fresh balls, Pause stops the clock and the table, and the three-dot menu at the end of the bar holds sound and the full keyboard list. Click the table once, then the arrow keys work — the space bar only pulls the plunger while the table has focus, so it still scrolls the page everywhere else.

How do you play this pinball game?

Hold Space to draw the plunger back and let go to launch. The arrow keys work the flippers — left arrow or Z for the left flipper, right arrow or / for the right — and they are independent, so both can be up at once. On a phone the whole left half of the table fires the left flipper and the whole right half fires the right, with no visible buttons covering the playfield, and a drag near the bottom pulls the plunger.

The first thing to shoot is the Hull Plating bank: three drop targets on the left, square to a right-flipper shot. Knock all three down and the Command Deck hole behind them is exposed. Shoot the hole and the deck offers you a mission; either flipper button locks it in. There is no timer on the choice, so you can read all five.

What makes this a space pinball game?

You are the duty pilot on the deck of the cutter Cosmic Command. Every device on the table is part of the ship: the pop bumpers are a Debris Field, the spinner in the left orbit is a Solar Sail, the centre ramp is The Gantry, two standup targets charge the Reactor Cells, and the scoop they light is a Jump Gate that teleports the ball across the playfield into the Command Deck. It is a space pinball game in the plain sense of the words — a pinball table with a space theme — and the whole thing is original: the layout, the art, the mission names, the rank ladder and the synthesised sound.

The palette is a dark, jewel-toned instrument panel rather than the warm paper the rest of this site uses, because a pinball machine is a lit object in a dark room and looks wrong any other way. It stays dark in both light and dark themes; the page around it follows your theme normally.

What are the five missions?

Every mission is built on a different shot
MissionTimeObjectiveShot
Salvage Run45s12 bumper hits, then re-plate the hullPops, then the drop bank
Solar Sail40s30 spins and 2 left orbitsThe spinner and the orbit
Gantry Repair50s4 ramps — each one adds 4 secondsThe centre ramp
Slip the Gate35sLight and shoot the Jump Gate twiceStandups, then the scoop
All Handsnone6 major shots with two balls liveEverything, at 3x

All Hands is only offered once the other four are done, and it is the only place multiball comes from. Finish all five and the table loops: everything resets to available and every award is worth half as much again, then twice, then two and a half times. That is why a good game keeps going rather than ending at a fixed ceiling.

Does the pinball physics actually work?

It is a real simulation, not a set of scripted bounces. The ball is integrated on a fixed 240 Hz timestep with swept continuous collision detection — every wall is tested against the ball's whole path through the step rather than its position at the end of it, so the ball cannot pass through anything however fast it is travelling. That is the failure that makes most browser pinball feel broken, and there is a test in this repository that fires a maximum-speed ball at every wall on the table from sixty-four angles and asserts it never gets out.

The flipper impulse is resolved in the flipper's own moving frame, so where you hit the ball matters. At the base the flipper surface is moving about 550 units a second; at the tip it is moving 2,200. A tip shot makes the orbit and a base shot dribbles, which is the whole reason a pinball player learns to aim with the tip. Hold a flipper up and the ball settles into a cradle instead of bouncing off.

Can you play pinball on a phone?

Yes, and it is designed for it rather than shrunk onto it. The flipper zones are the two halves of the table and are tracked per finger, so both flippers work at once — a second finger cancelling the first is the single commonest bug in touch pinball. The plunger is a pull and release with a power bar, and a short tap launches at full power so nobody gets stuck on it. Nudging needs a deliberate two-finger tap, which cannot happen by accident from a flipper press.

The table is sized from the space the board actually has, so it fits in portrait without cropping, and the fullscreen button gives it the whole screen. In landscape the mission list and the rank ladder move into columns beside the table rather than the table stretching.

How do you get better at pinball?

  • Learn the tip shot before anything elseThe flipper's surface speed grows with distance from the pivot, so a ball struck at the tip leaves four times faster than one struck at the base. Every long shot on this table — the orbit, the ramp, the Jump Gate — needs the tip, and nothing else you learn matters as much.
  • Cradle, then aimHold a flipper up as the ball arrives and it settles against the flipper instead of bouncing. From a cradle you can wait, look at what is lit, and take the shot you want rather than the shot the table gives you. Panicking and flipping at everything is what loses balls.
  • Chase the combo, not the single shotLeft orbit, Gantry ramp, Jump Gate, Command Deck and completing the plating bank each extend a chain worth up to five times. The chain lapses after three and a half seconds, so a ramp that returns the ball to the other flipper is the best possible setup for the next major shot.
  • Use the inlanesEvery pass through an inlane raises the end-of-ball bonus multiplier, to a maximum of five. Two banks, a mission and a few ramps at 5x is worth more than most single shots on the table, and it costs nothing beyond letting the ball roll where it was going anyway.
  • Nudge early, not desperatelyA nudge is worth spending when the ball is drifting towards an outlane and still has time to be moved. Three in quick succession will tilt the table and forfeit the bonus, so treat the DANGER warning as the real limit rather than a suggestion.
  • Take Gantry Repair when you are shooting wellEach ramp made adds four seconds to its own timer, so a player who can hit the centre ramp repeatedly effectively has an untimed mission and a 12,000-point shot on repeat. It is the highest-value mission on the table for anyone who has learned one shot properly.

Pinball questions people ask

Is this pinball game free to play?
Yes. It is free, there is no sign-up, no download and no app. Open the page and the table is there; your high score is kept in your own browser and never leaves your device.
How do you get multiball in this pinball game?
Complete the first four missions, then shoot the Command Deck again and choose All Hands. It puts a second ball into play and triples every award while both are live.
What does tilt mean in pinball?
Nudging the table moves the ball, but each nudge adds to a tilt warning that decays over a few seconds. Push it too far and the table tilts: the flippers go dead, scoring stops and the end-of-ball bonus is forfeited until the next ball.
What is the skill shot?
A plunge judged so the ball crests the top of the table but does not carry all the way round the orbit drops into the return lane instead of the left flipper. That is worth 25,000, and the power bar beside the plunger marks the band you are aiming for.
Does this pinball game work offline?
Once you have opened it, yes. The page is cached by the site's service worker, so it plays with no network at all, and it can be installed to a home screen like an app.

The rules in six lines

  1. 1Launch the ballHold Space, or drag down near the bottom of the table on a phone, then let go. The power you choose changes where the ball ends up.
  2. 2Drop the Hull Plating bankThree drop targets stand in front of the Command Deck hole. Knock all three down and the hole is exposed; that is worth 12,000 on its own.
  3. 3Shoot the Command DeckThe hole holds the ball and the deck offers you a mission, one every nine tenths of a second. Either flipper button locks in the one on the display.
  4. 4Finish the mission before the timer runs outEvery award doubles while a mission is running. If the timer expires or you drain, the mission fails and stays available for the next ball.
  5. 5Keep the ball aliveThree balls, with one automatic save in the first twelve seconds of each. Extra balls come at the Navigator rating and at one million points.
  6. 6Climb the flight ratingEight ranks from Deckhand to Cosmic Command, earned on missions completed or on score, whichever comes first. Reaching Flight Lead counts as a win.
